Did you know that one in six adults and 30-40% of primary care patients suffer from medically unexplained symptoms, chronic functional syndromes or psychosocial factors linked to chronic pain? Collectively these are known as Psychophysiological Disorders or PPD.
So, what do we do then?
Health professionals are slowly changing their approach to dealing with chronic pain by prescribing medication for it and you may find that your GP will refer you to a pain clinic. There are studies that show that medication alone does not work in the longer term, increasing dosages doesn’t help the pain, in some cases pain gets worse.
When we work with pain, we need to consider both the mind and body for the best results. This is not saying that your pain is not real or that you are creating it consciously, your pain is very real, it is just not being caused by the area where you feel the pain! Once you begin to look more deeply into the pain and the actual underlying cause, you will begin to understand that there might well be a different reason for it than you had initially thought.
Our step by step collaborative approach enables you to work at your own pace, gaining greater understanding of how and why you have come to this point in your life. You are not alone in this, there are many other people who have had similar experiences and come through this recovery process to live pain free.
The best results are when recovery from chronic pain is collaborative, when we link what we are experiencing and feeling in our body with our mind and emotions.
